About Trinity
Purpose and Mission
The purpose of Trinity Evangelical Church is to present the Christian faith verbally, visibly and vitally to the communities which we have been given to influence. We believe a great commitment to the great commandment (Matthew 22:36-40) and Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) will grow a great church.
We will fulfill our purpose and mission by applying the five fold purposes of the church: Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry and Evangelism.
Statement of Faith
We believe the Bible to be the inerrant, inspired, the only infallible authoritative word of God. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and whose indwelling presence and anointing enables Christians to live a Godly life, exercise spiritual gifts, and bear the fruit of the Spirit. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Church History
In 1816, the First Baptist Church had its beginning in a schoolhouse located on land owned by William Whittredge. The formal organization of the church took place on April 16, 1817. The first church building was constructed on Park Street and dedicated on October 8, 1828. This remained the house of worship until April 29, 1860 when it was destroyed by fire.
Undaunted in resolve and faith, parishioners began efforts toward building a new church on the corner of Haverhill and Mount Vernon Streets. Due to a delay because of the Civil War, work was not completed until August 1, 1886, and the building was dedicated to the Lord. Once again, however, their faith was tested and this second building was destroyed by fire on February 6, 1927. The cornerstone for the present Ministry Center was set on December 7, 1928 and this third building was dedicated on June 7, 1931. As growth continued the need for classrooms was pressing so ground-breaking ceremonies were held in September of 1960 for the Christian Education Building.
Construction on a new Worship Center (which includes the present-day sanctuary, fellowship hall, foyer, and youth room) began in 1996. The dedication service in the new sanctuary was held on Easter Sunday, 1997. In September 2001, the name of the church was changed from First Baptist Church to Trinity Evangelical Church to better reflect who we are as a congregation. In the spring of 2006, the congregation voted to move ahead with a new vision of reaching the next generation by constructing a state-of-the-art children's ministry center, youth ministry center, and gymnasium. To facilitate this expansion, the church purchased property at 62 Mount Vernon Street on November 1, 2006.
Trinity Evangelical Church has steadfastly presented the message of salvation through the blood of Jesus and has labored to help Christians mature and become obedient to God's leading. God's faithfulness through decades of diligence has brought us to this place. His great hand of leading, protection, and direction guides the steps of this Body of Christ. Great is his faithfulness.
We sincerely hope that your story will be a part of our story.
