Thirty years ago a remarkable young American woman set out to identify the poorest country on earth and then go there determined to see what God could do through her to make a positive difference in those people's lives. The country was Bangladesh and the young woman, Faith Willard, quickly learned that the most destitute members of the population were the widows of the country, who were considered social outcasts and shunned by even their dead husband's families. Faith also learned of an indigenous art form in Bangladesh that produced beautiful embroidered silks, which she quickly realized the widows were capable of producing if they had a place to work and equipment to use. From that beginning, The Widow's Friend was born and today those silks are sold and cherished across America, both for the art they represent and for the hope they have brought to the lives of otherwise desperate women. The Widow's Friend organization has grown to include two medical clinics, an orphan's home, a hostel for girls and a high school for the deaf. Officially recognized and registered by the Social Welfare Ministry of the Bangladesh government, the Widow's Friend is making a tremendous impact in one of the poorest and most populated nations on earth.
