In the late 1980's, Christy Wilson, the first missionary to Afghanistan, challenged Fred Schaeffer to think about missions. Late one night, not able to sleep, he began to pray. God spoke to Fred to go to Australia to evangelize. He asked, "But who Lord?" It was then that God began to speak to him about ministry with the Aborigines who are among the most neglected people on the face of the earth. They are looked upon as being sub-human and often face persecution. This has placed them on the lowest rung of the economic and social scale with a great distrust of white people, institutions and religions.
In 1991 Fred and his wife Carol gave up a very successful international business in Boston to obey God's call and relocated to Australia. Fred and Carol have taken their proven experiences in developing businesses and have applied them to the building of faith based businesses for the Aborigines. This is a two fold ministry: It evangelizes and disciples the Australian Aborigines. As Fred teaches them business skills, the Christian leaders develop business enterprises so they can support their own ministries. The Schaffers see a change in the Aborigines as their economic levels increase as well as the new birth taking hold of their hearts and manifesting spiritual growth.
Today Fred and Carol are Australian citizens and pastor a church in the city of Tweed Heads. Trinity is blessed to have Fred and Carol worship with us whenever they visit their daughter and son-in-law who are members of Trinity.
