Born and raised in First Baptist Church of North Reading (now Trinity Evangelical Church), Dorothy (Dottie) Jeanes felt the call of missions to Japan through the preaching of her pastor. The call to Japan became strong in Dottie’s heart, however, she reasoned that God would never expect her to minister to a people who had been our bitter enemies in World War II and besides, the Japanese language was one of the most difficult to learn. In spite of her reasoning not to go to Japan, the call became stronger and was confirmed while attending Urbana, a unique week-long national missions conference held every two years where she said, “Yes Lord, I’m willing to accept the challenge.” She faithfully served the Lord in Japan for 35 years and then for another 10 years teaching English, using the Bible, to Japanese people in Boston. Now retired, Dottie is our Missionary Emeritus and it is most fitting that our missions scholarship bears her name.
